St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
About

The very first known Episcopal Church in east-central Alabama was St. John’s in the Wilderness, Oswichee (Russell County), AL, established in 1849, some 17 years after Phenix City was established. In 1870 the Church of the Redeemer held services in Seale (Russell County), AL. Both churches closed after a few years. St. Stephen’s, Glenville (Russell County), AL was established in 1922 but later divided into St. Matthew’s-in-the-Pines, Seale, AL, which was established in 1954 (and is still active) and the Church of the Resurrection in the Russell Woods area of Phenix City (Russell County), AL, in 1957.
The Church of the Resurrection ultimately succumbed to attrition in 1985; however, in 1986 at the urging of Bishop Furman Stough (Diocese of Alabama), the Church of the Resurrection was re-established. In 1987 a 4.5 acre plot located on US 280/431 in Smiths Station (Lee County), was purchased. With newly acquired land but no church building, the Resurrection congregation voted to build a new church on the 280/431 property to be named St. Stephen’s in honor of the old Glennville church. On February 5, 1988, the bishop of Alabama approved the renaming of the Church of the Resurrection, Phenix City to St. Stephen’s (Smiths Station).
Our First service was held in the new sanctuary on Thanksgiving Day, 1988. Stained Glass windows reflecting some of the great acts of God in scripture were installed in the nave. In 1997, the parish hall and educational wing of the church were completed.
We have something special at St. Stephen’s. We are a group of Christians that hear Christ, and love and care for one another.
We look forward to worshiping with you!
